New Traditions

What New Year’s resolutions are you making for 2016?

Don’t do resolutions? That’s quite alright. The percentage of people that make resolutions as they get older drops and I don’t think it’s a mystery as to why. We all start out with good intentions, try to do something that will make us a better person or make our lives a little better but ultimately we fail. But that’s okay! As I’ve gotten older I treat myself much like I would treat my equipment, got to upkeep the mind, body and soul before it breaks down. Since I don’t do resolutions anymore either, I started a new tradition. Instead of fretting over what I didn’t change during the year, I reminisce about what was great about the passing year.
At each New Year I take an empty jar and label it for the upcoming year. As the days go by any significant, happy or major event that happens during that year gets written down on a piece of paper and put into the jar. These are things that I want to remember that made a difference or impact in my life. On New Year’s Eve, any family members that contributed to the jar, opens the jar and reads all of the events that took place during the passing year. You’d be surprised at all of the good and happy events you forget occurred during the year. We all have a tendency to focus on negative occurrences but this brings us back to what we have to be thankful for in the past year and gives hope as to the great things we can look forward to in the new year.
As we contemplate and worry about the upcoming year and all of the expenses and work that needs to be planned, if you go back and make just one resolution, or if you don’t want to call it that, a goal, resolve to remember the joys that life brought to you and all that you were grateful for in the passing year.Have a Happy and Prosperous New Year!
